Sir William Lister¹ made the statement years ago that the presence of a hole in the retina with a detachment ruled out the possibility of a malignant melanoma. Duke-Elder,² in his latest edition, remarks that the statement has never been contradicted. This case is presented to demonstrate that the two conditions can appear simultaneously.

Mr. M. H., aged 52, in apparent good health, was first seen on Jan. 5, 1950, with the history of a shadow before the right eye associated with occasional flashes of light, of two-weeks' duration. These was a vague history of his striking his head upon entering an automobile several days prior to the appearance of the visual symptoms. The patient had been told of a "scar" on the retina at a previous examination, in July 1949.

The refractive error was found to be as follows:
