ENDOGENOUS INTRAOCULAR FUNGOUS INFECTION

ENDOGENOUS fungous infections of the interior of the eyes are rare. Müller (1903)1 described metastatic nodules in the retina from miliary actinomycosis arising in the lungs. Dimmer (1914) reported choroidoscleritis due to a fungus thought to be Aspergillus fumigatus. Stock (1926)3 reported abscesses of the vitreous and retina caused apparently by identical fungi. Verhoeff (1924)4 reported a case of uveitis caused by an actinomycete-like organism in one eye of a patient after a postoperative infection by a fungus of a similar type in the fellow eye. Verhoeff (1926)5 also reported idiopathic retinochoroiditis caused by a similar organism occurring in a patient after a febrile illness. Churchill and Stober (1914)6 recovered blastomycetes from the vitreous of an eye of a patient with systemic blastomycosis, but no description of the ocular lesion was given.
