SHORTENING OF THE EYEBALL FOR DETACHED RETINA

IN 1931 I began to operate for retinal detachments which seemed otherwise incurable by shortening the eyeball. The technic of this operation was published in 1933.1 In the United States, Pischel described this operation in the ARCHIVES in 1939.2

In this paper I wish to describe those details of the operation which I have changed since my first publication, enumerate the present indications for this operation and, finally, present the results. A detailed description of the operation appeared in ``Ophthalmologische Operationslehre,'' edited by Thiel.3

If one shortens an eyeball, one diminishes its volume, and therefore an adequate amount of fluid must be drained from the eyeball during the operation. Prior to the time of the first publication, I tried to drain the eye by puncturing the exposed choroid with a discission needle (case 1).
