The brilliant results obtained in recent years by Gonin 1 and some of his followers with his new surgical treatment for this generally intractable disease have revived hopes of being able to deal with it more satisfactorily, by this or by some similar method of treatment.
At the beginning of 1929, being much interested in a case of traumatic detachment which occurred in a university athlete, and which proved refractory to the usual treatment first at the hands of a confrère and later of myself, I decided to make an effort to obtain a permanent cure along the lines recommended by Gonin.
A careful study of the method, as found in the recent literature,2 excited in me certain, possibly only theoretical, objections. The most important of these was that the introduction of a cautery point through the different coats of the eye into the vitreous might
