The author, formerly of Berlin, stresses the importance of diseases of the nose and sinuses in the causation of diseases of the extraocular structures. Besides the direct spread of diseases of the nose to the eye, chronic conditions can produce a sensorial or a vasomotor reflex in the eye and give rise to neuralgias and chronic edema of the lids and orbital tissues.

Sinusitis may result in the spread of an acute infection to the orbit and lead to exophthalmos and displacement of the globe by the formation of a mucocele. Infections of the posterior ethmoid cells and of the sphenoid sinus can cause peripheral contraction of the visual fields and central scotoma. In cases of central scotoma in which the blood, spinal fluid and nervous system are normal and no clearcut infection of the sinuses is found, opening the posterior ethmoid cells and the sphenoid sinus may improve the . . .
