LOCAL TOXIC EFFECT OF DETERGENTS ON OCULAR STRUCTURES

In recent years attention has been directed to the value of detergents in ophthalmology. Although they are being used as germicides and cleansing agents,1 most of the ophthalmologic consideration has been devoted to their penetrant action, i. e., to their ability to aid in increasing the penetration of therapeutically active substances through the cornea. O'Brien and Swan2 demonstrated that the intraocular penetration of carbaminoylcholine chloride could be enhanced by the use of 0.1 per cent zephiran chloride, 1 per cent saponin, 0.1 per cent Duponol PC or 0.1 per cent Aerosol OT. Other investigators followed this lead and showed that the intraocular penetration of other locally applied drugs could be increased by the use of detergents.
