NEURODERMATITIS WITH CATARACT

REPORT OF TWO CASES

Prior to 1921 there were no American reports on the syndrome of cataract associated with neurodermatitis. In the European literature, however, Rothmund,1 in 1868, described the occurrence of cataract in connection with changes in the skin. Andogsky2 used the term "cataracta dermatogenes" in describing a case of bilateral cataract with an associated cutaneous eruption. Similar cases have been reported by Löwenstein,3 Gault,4 Winkler5 and others.

The first report in the English language was that of Davis,6 who, in 1921, described the case of a 15 year old girl with neurodermatitis accompanied by cataracts, which matured in one year. Daniel,7 from the Mayo Clinic, in 1935, reported 3 cases and mentioned the importance of a family history of allergy.
