In pathologic specimens one occasionally sees a cone nucleus lying outside the external limiting membrane. In routine preparations, gross distortion of these delicate structures due to pathologic and postmortem changes and to crude technic undoubtedly accounts for many such appearances, but the anomaly exists in occasional normal retinae ; we feel that a description based on a clinically and histologically normal eye, fixed especially for a study of the visual cells, may prove of interest.

Although Parsons¹ attributed the discovery of ectopic cone nuclei to van Genderen Stort, the condition was first seen by Stöhr,² who found many such nuclei in a clinically normal eye. He was not sure as to whether these nuclei were the only ones in their respective cells or were extra, but thought the former more likely.
