Investigations made so far of changes in volume of the vitreous body in connection with different hydrogen ion concentrations were performed on dissected parts of the solid vitreous of the larger animals. This holds good both for the experiments of Baurmann,1 who was the first to investigate this problem systematically, and for those of Duke-Elder,2 Goedbloed3 and others. The destruction of the vitreous body was carried out to an even greater extent in the studies of Salit and O'Brien4 and others. The previous literature, beginning with Fischer's5 well known investigations, comprises a large number of articles referring to the question of swelling of the vitreous and glaucoma. The technic described in the studies reported in these publications as well as in some later experiments was met by so much critical objection, however, that a description of this experimental work can be dispensed with.
