Effects of the commonly used "miotics" and "mydriatics" on the size of the pupil and the state of accommodation are generally well known to the ophthalmologist. However, records of the quantitative effects of these drugs are often difficult to find and are sometimes contradictory, and even the qualitative effects are in certain instances either controversial or not widely known. The actions of these drugs are reviewed from a physiologic standpoint, with a summary of the quantitative data whenever possible.

An understanding of the reactions of the autonomic nervous system in general, especially with regard to the concept of chemical mediation of nerve impulses, is essential to an interpretation of the effects of various drugs on the intraocular muscles.
