This volume on the etiology of trachoma offers the first complete survey of the subject since the monograph of Axenfeld, which appeared in 1914. In view of the worldwide importance of the disease, this review should be welcomed not only by special investigators in the field but by ophthalmologists, public health workers and microbiologists in general. The extensive experience of the author has enabled him to analyze in a critical spirit the extensive literature which has now accumulated on the disease.

The volume opens with a short but adequate description of the clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis and pathologic picture of the disease. In the second chapter there follows a discussion of epidemiology and possible predisposing factors. Six black and white and one color photographs serve to illustrate this part of the text.
