The purpose of For My Patient: Macular Degeneration is to help patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) as well as their family and friends understand all the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of ARMD.

The text uses the "eye as a camera" analogy to explain retinal anatomy, the pathogenesis, and the natural history of ARMD. The book reassuringly emphasizes that patients virtually always maintain some peripheral vision with ARMD and only rarely become totally blind from the disease.

A description of dry- vs wet-type ARMD is included along with a description of symptoms, diagnostic measures (eg, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography), the Amsler grid, and therapeutic approaches. The risk to the fellow eye in wet-type ARMD is emphasized as a reason for vigilant screening by the patient and physician. The booklet concludes with answers to some most commonly asked questions that reiterate some of the key points.
