I read with interest the Editorial by Parrish¹ in the September issue of the ARCHIVES. The policy of several peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals to preclude the publication of papers previously reported in medical newspapers regularly puts me in the position, in effect, of accepting or rejecting papers submitted to those journals. The editors would be horrified by my lack of qualifications for such a service. Not that they have ever threatened to compensate me for it.

As editor-in-chief of Ocular Surgery News, I believe the field should mount an exhaustive search for publication standards that eliminate the spectacle of distressed researchers driven to plead with me, the unqualified arbiter, against the accomplishment of my job, which is to cover the news. These are not scoundrels or politicians, but researchers, and probably have done nothing to deserve the aggravation. For my part, I am left wondering why they are calling me . . .
