In their preface to Ophthalmic Desk Reference, the editors state that in writing this text, they have attempted to fill a gap that exists between the extensive and definitive source books of ophthalmology and the introductory manuals and synopses. In this effort they have succeeded. Within its 659 pages, Ophthalmic Desk Reference covers nearly every area of knowledge in clinical ophthalmology, delivering a large amount of information in a compact form. Clearly, the sheer quantity of important information within the field of ophthalmology limits the detail to which any given subject can be explored in a text of this size. Rather than attempt to teach ophthalmology, the editors have chosen to present an extremely concise and well-organized collection of useful ophthalmic information to allow someone already trained in the field to access the desired information rapidly.
