Beginning with the preface, the author challenges us to become the best surgeons we can. Once having given us this challenge, he then proceeds to explain how we may accomplish this. The author leads us through a rigorously outlined, carefully organized, and well-written book. Koch has the unique ability to take the difficult process of phacoemulsification, break it down into its component parts, and show how these parts function and fit in with the total surgical procedure in the safest, most time-efficient and elegant manner. He does all this with a delightful sense of humor.

Everything proceeds in a logical manner as exemplified in the opening chapter, "Prepping and Anesthesia," in which he explains the pros and cons of topical vs local anesthesia.
