Over the past several decades, the practice of optometry has begun to include more diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Concurrent with this expansion of privileges is a rapid development of sophisticated diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities for glaucoma. If optometrists begin to take on more of the primary care of patients with glaucoma, members of this group may believe it necessary to educate themselves on the current state of the art.

Primary Care of the Glaucomas addresses this need by proposing to help the practicing optometrist manage (or comanage) patients with glaucoma without a heavy dose of "rare, esoteric information." It is intended that "this text will serve as a silent 'colleague' for optometrists in the examination room." Chapter authors include optometrists, a PhD, and a physician.
