Books, the GOLD standard for disseminating and storing information for five centuries, may have become victims of their own success. There are too many books! Medical libraries are bursting with books and periodicals. Most university libraries are being forced to cut back on periodical subscriptions and new book purchases because of budgetary and space constraints.

The medical information explosion of the last half century has helped to fuel this surfeit of literature. As a rough example, 25 medical publishers were listed as exhibitors at the 1993 American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting in Dallas, Tex, and a year later in Chicago, Ill, at the Academy's annual meeting, the number had grown to 38—an increase of 34%!

In a microcosm, the ARCHIVES is also suffering from a plethora of books. There are an increasing number of new titles to review each month and the ARCHIVES has a very precise space allotment . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
