This book is the first of a series on ocular pathophysiology put forth by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Other volumes in preparation include the following: 2: Defense of the Ocular Surface, 3: Transparency and Refraction of the Cornea, and 4: Glaucoma. Fehér, the editor of the series and the author of this first volume, has successfully compiled an excellent updated summary on the pathophysiology of the preocular tear film.

The book is organized into seven sections. The first three cover the structural organization, physiology, and embryology of the ocular surface. The sections are well written and easy to read, with clear and concise diagrams throughout the book. For example, there are schematics depicting the anatomy of the upper eyelid, various types of conjunctival cells, and neuronal regulation of tear secretion. There are detailed descriptions of the types of conjunctival cells, accompanied by electron micrographs.
