Information has come to light regarding the granular-lattice corneal dystrophy reported in the November 1993 issue of the ARCHIVES.¹ Granular-lattice corneal dystrophy has been shown to map to chromosome 5q along with granular and lattice type I corneal stromal dystrophies.² This information is very exciting with regard to the genetic origin of the actual dystrophies themselves. In addition, family 3,¹ which was used for the linkage studies² and claimed to have no Italian heritage, did not share alleles with the Italian families in this study. This family is the only one that cannot be traced to Italy in terms of its national origin. The fact that it did not share alleles with the Italian families means that it may represent a second mutation that gave rise to the dystrophy. This appears to have occurred in a different and distinct geographic location.
