Ucla's Jules Stein Eye Institute Researchers Receive Honors.
UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute members Debora B. Farber, PhD, professor of ophthalmology and associate director of the UCLA School of Medicine Brain Research Institute, and Richard N. Lolley, PhD, professor and chair of UCLA's Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, jointly received the prestigious Proctor Medal, sponsored by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). The two researchers were awarded the medal at ARVO's annual meeting in Sarasota, Fla, on May 4,1994. On that occasion, Dr Farber presented a lecture entitled "From Mice to Men: The Cyclic GMP-Phosphodiesterase Gene in Vision and Disease," and Dr Lolley spoke on "The rd Gene Defect Triggers Programmed Rod Cell Death." Established in 1946 in memory of Dr Francis I. Proctor, the Proctor Medal honors outstanding researchers in the basic and clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology.
