Reference Error.

In the articles entitled "Rigor of Research Methods in Studies of the Effectiveness and Safety of Cataract Extraction With Intraocular Lens Implantation" and "Synthesis of the Literature on Visual Acuity and Complications Following Cataract Extraction With Intraocular Lens Implantation," published in the February 1994 issue of the ARCHIVES (1994; 112:228-238; and 1994;112:239-252), a study by Steinert et al1 was cited and incorrectly classified as having examined both visual acuity and complications following cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. This study should have been classified in the group that examined only complications.

This error resulted in the assignment of a lower overall quality score (measure of the rigor of research methods). On page 233, in the last row of Table 1, the correct quality score for the study by Steinert et al should have been 61. Powe et al recalculated the pooled result for the percentage of eyes . . .
