AT THE start of my 10-year term of office as editor of the ARCHIVES, I offered a "forum for sober, analytical, and interpretive thoughts on matters of value to our readers" and anticipated an informative and useful dialogue.1 I have enjoyed this process immensely and hope that our readers have benefited from the attempt. The founding editor, Hermann Knapp, declared in 1869:

The objectives and goals of the Archives of Ophthalmology are education: to inform its readers of progress, problems, and pertinent research in the practice of ophthalmology through the publication of original contributions and observations.

This mission statement is valid today; we remain committed to the publication of new and substantial information.
