Adverse effects of diabetes mellitus on ocular tissues are many and familiar to ophthalmologists but seldom have the clinically significant problems, pathogenetic mechanisms, and potential treatments been summarized as succinctly as in this modest volume. Included within its 275 pages are an update of current principles of diabetes care by Crofford and associates and a chapter outlining the course and treatment of diabetic vascular disease in the kidney.

The epidemiology of retinopathy and other ocular problems observed in a large population-based study (The Wisconsin Epidemiological Study of Diabetic Retinopathy) are reviewed by Klein et al. They analyze the impact of a variety of medical and behavioral risk factors, and point out that the onset and progression of the devastating retinal changes depend particularly on two factors that might at least be controllable: elevated blood pressure and hyperglycemia.
