The formula for success of the Archives of Ophthalmology was set forth by the journal's founder, Dr Hermann Knapp, with its first issue in 1869. The important ingredients of the formula: "the high standards he set for himself and his writings and the equally high standards he set for his contributors"1 have ensured the journal's preeminence for more than a century. When Knapp began the journal 125 years ago, however, he was capable enough, ophthalmology was uncomplicated enough, and the number of articles submitted was small enough to allow him to personally review and edit all of the ophthalmological articles submitted. "He would take it upon himself as editor to make corrections and changes and even supply new titles for the manuscripts submitted to him. This unsolicited service was not always welcomed by the authors, and it added to Knapp's unmerited reputation of being an uncompromising perfectionist."1 Ten . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
