Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in our elderly population and will assume an increasing role as our population continues to age. In recent years, much work has been published on the epidemiologic, pathologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of AMD. This immense body of knowledge, including basic scientific and clinical studies, may be difficult for the general ophthalmologist to obtain in an organized and comprehensive manner.

The editors' objective in preparing this book was to furnish the general ophthalmologist and the ophthalmologist in training with "a current status of our diagnostic, therapeutic, and basic science knowledge of AMD." As a result, the book contains comprehensive reviews of epidemiology, pathology, and the clinical presentation of AMD. Practical guides to office evaluation as well as fluorescein angiography and fundus photography are included.
