—We appreciate the interest of Drs Zadnik and Mutti in our article,¹ but we disagree with part of their critique.

The purpose of the article was to evaluate the reproducibility and validity of laser flare/cell meter readings in terms of observer agreement and agreement with clinical gradings of flare and cells using a slit lamp. Measurements made before cataract surgery and 1 to 3 days and 1 to 3 weeks after surgery were available.

We used the data obtained 1 to 3 days after surgery to evaluate observer agreement because there was little variability among measurements before surgery and at 1 to 3 weeks after surgery. The laser flare/cell measurements were compared with clinical gradings at each of the three time points. The correlation of laser flare measurements between technicians was.97, and the correlation of cell measurements was.96. The means and SEs of flare and cell measurements . . .
