To the Editor.

—I read with interest the article by Bhatnagar et al,1 which explored the risk factors for the development of cataract in southern India. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in India, accounting for 55% of all cases.2 Many of these cases of blindness occur in relatively young patients.2,3 During a recent visit to southern India, I compared the age and sex of patients with cataract in this population with the age of patients from an urban population in the United States.

Patients and Methods.

—A group of consecutive patients who underwent cataract extraction during a 2-month period at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India, was compared with a group of consecutive patients from the General Eye Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston.
