To the Editor.
—Krebs et al,1 in their case report, suggested that a scleral patch could be placed over an exposed or extruding implant valve to prevent devastating infection.
The authors cited the experience of Watzke,2 who in fact reported only partial success with this technique. We are more intrigued with the promising results reported in 1991 by Dresner et al.3 In their report, autologous fascial grafts from either the fascia lata femoris or the temporal fascia were placed over exposed retinal buckles. One patient of particular interest had a scleral patch graft that had melted. His condition was stabilized by grafting the fascia.
In the event of tube or plate exposure, this approach would be well worth remembering.
