Volume 9 in the Progress in Retinal Research series represents a broad sampling of review articles aimed primarily at those with basic research interests. The topics covered in the 12 chapters range from population genetics to retinal transplantation. Several of the articles are related to three general subject areas that are recurrent themes within this series: inner retinal neurons, retinal circuitry, and retinal metabolism. Material dealing with neurons of the inner retina is grouped into three chapters according to either cell type ("The Mosaic of Amacrine Cells in the Mammalian Retina" by D. I. Vaney) or neurotransmitter type ("Cell Types Using Glutamate as a Neurotransmitter in the Vertebrate Retina" by S. C. Massey and "The Dopamine System of the Teleost Fish Retina" by Negishi et al).
