—We appreciate the comments by Dr Gross and his colleagues regarding their description of a similar inexpensive air pump for vitreoretinal surgery in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. We apologize for having missed this description during our survey of the literature. Apparently, both groups independently developed a simple, inexpensive, and reliable air pump for use in vitreoretinal surgery.
Hopefully, these two articles will facilitate the use of such inexpensive air pumps throughout the world, particularly in areas where cost is an important component in the level of available care in the vitreoretinal field.
