The Vitreous is a timely compendium of much of the world's knowledge about the vitreous. The book is a rich mosaic of the author's substantial personal experience and research, and observations from clinicians and scientists around the world. Sebag successfully blends historic observations and hypotheses with current data based on advanced laboratory methods of ultrastucture, biochemistry, and cell biology. The foreword by Charles L. Schepens properly highlights the book's valuable features, including extensive bibliographies and a balanced treatment of most subjects presenting, and reconciling when possible, different data and opinions from different investigators.

The book is divided into seven major sections, with the first four dealing with the basic embryology, biochemistry, and structure of the vitreous. In these chapters, old data and classic ideas are reviewed, but supporting or modifying data are presented from current research using advanced laboratory methods.
