To the Editor.

—I would like to comment on the article by Naumann and Küchle¹ in the August 1989 issue of the ARCHIVES regarding unilateral arcus lipoides corneae with traumatic cyclodialysis in two patients.

I would make note that unilateral arcus senilis was also reported by Smith and Susac² in JAMA in 1973² and unilateral corneal arcus without carotid artery stenosis was reported by Kaptein³ in JAMA in 1977. The former article concerns an elderly patient with contralateral internal carotid artery occlusion proved at biopsy, and it was postulated that the diminished blood flow through the internal carotid lessened the local lipid deposition in the cornea of the homolateral eye. The authors went so far as to state that the presence of unilateral arcus might well be considered a diagnostic sign of carotid artery stenosis.
