With the 12th edition of General Ophthalmology, authors Vaughan, Asbury, and Tabbara have ensured that their textbook will continue to serve, as they claim in their preface, "as the most concise, current, and authoritative review of the subject for medical students, ophthalmology residents, practicing ophthalmologists, nurses, optometrists, and colleagues in other fields of medicine and surgery." This edition, like its predecessors, is well written, well illustrated, portable, and affordable.

General Ophthalmology's major strength is that it is readable; it is primarily a textbook, rather than a manual, reference, or study guide. The authors have been careful not to presume prior familiarity with the examination of the eye or with ophthalmic anatomy and terminology.
