Publication of the German edition of Naumann's Pathology of the Eye was greeted with impressive critical acclaim in Europe. The English edition, translated by David J. Apple, makes this work available to English-speaking ophthalmologists and pathologists. This book has the added advantage over the original 1980 German edition of having been extensively updated and having had the addition of numerous current references. The book consists of 17 chapters, each of which Professor Naumann is either sole author, senior author, or coauthor of. This no doubt contributes to the consistency of style that characterizes this work. In reading this book, the reader is easily able to forget that it is a translation, a tribute to the language and editorial skills of Dr Apple, who also contributed to the authorship of five of the chapters.
