This book takes its place among several other recent volumes on retinal degenerations. Newsome's stated aim is to provide a useful update for the clinician. In the main, the volume fulfills its purpose.

Twenty contributors join Dr Newsome to consider the heritable retinal degenerative disorders and other retinopathies. A wealth of information can be mined from the chapters. References at the end of chapters are typically numbered in the hundreds. However, the uneven quality of the writing and redundancies, engendered by the multiple-author approach, and lack of a conspicuous unifying framework or an integrated approach to patients with these disorders tarnish the wealth a bit.
