When I left the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and began my career as a professional research administrator in academia, I conceived the idea of writing a manual for faculty members that would have the dual purpose of explaining how one moves a grant application through the bureaucracy of an institution and also explain the mysteries of how a grant is processed and reviewed in Washington, DC. Twenty years later my ideas have progressed no futher than an outline.

It is with some delight, therefore, that I came across Dr Reif-Lehrer's book that explains not only the NIH review process but the National Science Foundation's (NSF) as well. She does so with a simplicity that takes a new applicant through the process step by step.
