In Reply.
—We appreciate the comments by Drs Lavin and Bird regarding our article. At the time the experiment was planned, we were not aware of the NMDA-receptor blocking action of ketamine. This factor may indeed have contributed to the surprising tolerance of some of our control eyes to ischemia for up to 240 minutes and to the favorable outcome in our vitreoperfusion group. We are currently assessing the role of this receptor in the pathophysiology of ischemic cell injury using our vitreoperfusion technique.
