Cataract is a major cause of blindness and disability in developing countries and is an increasing burden in industrialized settings as life expectancy grows and the population pyramid becomes more and more top heavy. Although the ophthalmic literature is replete with technical articles on cataract extraction, and we all eagerly await the latest work on foldable implants and other new technology, it is striking how little we know of the pathogenesis and risk factors for the development of lens opacities.
Cataract Epidemiology contains reports from the International Cataract Epidemiology Meeting, held in Noto, Japan, in 1986 and reflects the research and opinions of investigators from 14 countries. It brings into sharp focus the current directions and problems in cataract research.
