The Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) was founded in 1966 as a means for leaders of ophthalmology training programs to "discuss matters of mutual concern." Initially, one of the major topics was the establishment of a separate eye institute at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. The AUPO was highly influential in the ultimate establishment of the National Eye Institute (NEI). Over the past 21 years, the AUPO has evolved into a leadership role in ophthalmic training. This year, the organization has established goals, priorities, and long-range plans. These were reflected at the annual meeting held this year in Laguna
