Optic Neuritis Begins Recruitment at 15 Centers.

—Recruitment has now begun for a trial of methylprednisolone and prednisone for the treatment of optic neuritis. The trial also will explore the association between optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.

The Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT) is the first multicenter collaborative clinical trial in neuro-ophthalmology sponsored by the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.

The ONTT aims to determine whether treatment with either oral or intravenous steroids will reduce permanent optic nerve damage or speed recovery, and whether the complications of steroid therapy are insubstantial in relation to the magnitude of the treatment benefit.

In addition, patients will be followed up to explore the association of optic neuritis with multiple sclerosis. Neurologic examinations, magnetic resonance scans, and, at times, cerebrospinal fluid studies will be assessed for their predictive value of the development of future episodes of central nervous . . .
