The National Advisory Eye Council and staff of the National Eye Institute (NEI), Bethesda, Md, have, since 1975, published a series of comprehensive national vision plans. These plans were designed to establish and implement programs and policies of the NEI and to guide decision making by both staff and the Council. This volume represents an attempt by the Advisory Council and NEI staff to evaluate the implementation of the 1983-1987 plan. The book is divided into five sections corresponding to the major programs of the NEI: "Retinal and Choroidal Diseases," "Corneal Diseases," "Cataract," "Glaucoma," and "Strabismus, Amblyopia, and Visual Processing."

Each program is further divided into subprograms focusing on specific visual diseases, processes, or functions.
