—Many medical journals, including the ARCHIVES and the American Medical Association's other nine medical journals, are indexed following the NLM's MeSH. The NLM lists these headings in three volumes^1-3 and describes the rules for using the headings in a separate two-volume set.⁴ The NLM also updates these volumes annually in an effort to provide the best possible access to medical literature.

The MeSH headings provide a common language for both indexers and searchers who refer frequently to the MeSH volumes when constructing indexes or performing searches. For the occasional user, however, MeSH headings can be frustrating, since few of these users own the MeSH volumes.

Nonetheless, in-house indexes, such as those published in the ARCHIVES, are designed to help the journal's readers locate information.
