Caveat: Beware the Different Indexing Systems

To the Editor.

—I would like to offer my compliments to Dr Goldbaum1 for his detailed review of computerized access to knowledge and information. In his article, he emphasizes the advantages of making one's own search. To this I offer the following caveat—one must know the indexing system for each database or journal.

My warning stems from the frustration and irritation I experienced in an attempt to locate a recent epidemiologic article on ocular trauma published in the ARCHIVES during the past year. Because I like doing my own searches too, I have made a habit of filing each year's, or volume's, index of the ophthalmic journals I read in a loose-leaf notebook

Formula for ready reference.
