The original "International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity" (ICROP), published in 1984, addressed the active stages of the disorder and has proved to be a very valuable contribution.1 Classification of retinal detachment is the next logical step, and the article2 on this topic in the present issue of the ARCHIVES will likely be even more useful. Investigators from several countries have pooled their efforts to provide this new classification of retinal detachment.
Stage 4 of the original ICROP is expanded and a fifth stage is added in this article. The stages of retinal detachment are divided into the extrafoveal stage (4A), partial detachment including the fovea stage (4B), and total retinal detachment (stage 5).
A much better understanding of the development of the more severe end stages of retinopathy of prematurity has been gained from further surgical experience and the observations on a substantial number of histopathologic specimens.
