To the Editor.

—In response to Dr Reinecke's¹ excellent article concerning the safety and benefits of the hepatitis B vaccine I would add two points. First, if the general safety of the vaccine is inadequate to assuage ardent skeptics, then one can check their vaccine lot number to see if it was tested for human immunodeficiency virus by the American Red Cross. Untested lots can be sent to the Red Cross for testing. Second, vaccination should be considered at a timely career point. Specifically, students and residents should consider vaccination before the high-risk clinical years that precede their training in ophthalmology. Finally, a recombinant DNA vaccine synthesized by Escherichia coli will soon be widely available. Theoretically, this synthetic vaccine would be without the risks that some fear are associated with the vaccine currently in use. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
