—We appreciate Dr Alexander's detailed comments. While it is true that 22 study eyes had complications at the initial surgery, the other 31 study eyes had no significant complications at the time of initial implant surgery. The clinical course was similar in both groups of patients, and we believe this implicates the IOL. We agree with Dr Alexander that more information concerning the complications rate of closed-loop anterior chamber IOLs is needed. Such information should be forthcoming, as these lenses may now be implanted only as part of an FDA core investigation study with a three-year required follow-up for reporting of postoperative results and complications.

We wish to call Dr Alexander's attention to a letter to the editor by Stark et al1 concerning presentation of data to the Ophthalmic Devices Panel of the FDA about complications caused by closed-loop anterior chamber IOLs. Presentations were made by Drs . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
