Over the past few decades, Saudi Arabia has undergone drastic and abrupt changes from the pastoral to the urban. The vast oil resources have created a new wealth for the kingdom, which has been applied to every endeavor in this country, including health care. New colleges of medicine have been built over the past decade, as well as numerous modern hospitals in various regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A jewel in this crown is the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh (Figure), probably the largest (263 beds, 12 operating rooms), most luxurious, and best-equipped eye hospital in the world. It is the tertiary eye care center for the kingdom and has a staff of 45 physicians (30 of whom are ophthalmologists), six fellows, and 32 residents.
