In Reply.
—Bloom et al incorrectly imply that in our article published in the August 1986 issue of the ARCHIVES we avoided the issue of whether betaxolol, either alone or in combination with epinephrine, lowers IOP as well as does timolol. To the contrary, we plainly stated that "the magnitude of the effect [of betaxolol in reducing IOP] was not as great as that achieved with timolol" and cited a previous study that included the same group of patients and arrived at the same conclusion.
With reference to the specific criticisms, we agree with the first point regarding slight errors in the artist's graph (Fig 2). This was caused by the discovery that data from one patient were incorrectly entered into our calculations and, even though no statistical significance was altered, we felt obligated to change the tables following preparation of printer's proofs.
