—I would like to make a comment concerning the article discussing informed consent in senile cataract extraction written by Drs Lyndon Morgan and Ivan Schwab in the January 1986 issue of the ARCHIVES.¹

I am a practicing veterinary ophthalmologist and have been one for 16 years. It has been my experience when dealing with pet owners of preoperative cataract patients that I accomplish much more by writing a short description of what I intend to do and also what complications could arise. Speaking on a one-to-one basis to a client who owns a pet or to a 75-year-old cataract patient does not transmit the knowledge to that patient or client effectively. It has been my experience that when the client returns, having read all the notes, he is much more informed as to the outcome, the risks, and the probability of success. Perhaps if the surgeon . . .
