The first two volumes of this projected three-volume text indicate that the third edition of Ophthalmic Pathology will stand as the finest work on the pathology of the eye to appear to date. This is assuming that the third volume, which is not yet published, will be of an equivalent quality.

This book has a proud lineage. Although technically the third edition, it has some additional impressive ancestors. It is noted in the preface that, in 1938, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology produced the Atlas of Ophthalmic Pathology, written by Captain DeCoursey and Colonel Ash and assisted by Helenor C. Wilder and others. At this same time, the leading American pathology text was a slender but well-written volume by Jonas Friedenwald entitled The Pathology of the Eye, which had been published in 1929.
